About HAS

Healthcare Alternative Systems, Inc. (HAS) is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization providing behavioral health services to Chicago and the surrounding communities.  The premier behavioral health resource for Chicago’s Latino community, HAS provides culturally competent, bilingual (English and Spanish) services to a diverse population of men, women, and youth from all backgrounds.  HAS understands that in order to be effective, behavioral health services need to be holistic, personalized and participant-centered.  We offer a continuum of gender-specific programs addressing substance abuse, mental and physical health, family relationships, and more.  Every year, HAS serves over six thousand individuals.

At HAS, we believe that healthy individuals, healthy families, and healthy communities all depend on one another, a philosophy of caring and communal responsibility that defines our multi-faceted approach to behavioral health.  We strengthen individuals and families with programs that promote personal wellbeing and healthy relationships.  We support them with programs that foster family-friendly communities.  And we work closely with an extended network of community partners that allows us to reach more people in need and to provide our participants with high-quality, wrap-around services during and after their time at HAS.  Throughout its almost forty years in the community, HAS has worked with hospitals, social service agencies, universities, and research organizations to provide treatment and social services to individuals and their families where gaps in care existed.  We have also been extensively involved in research to determine the most effective treatment methodologies for our participants and community. We strive to be an integral part of the communities we serve—to assist those communities, as well as the community partners who support us in our mission, however we can.

To support our treatment mission, HAS employs a multi-cultural professional team including physicians, psychiatrists, and nurses; licensed social workers, certified addiction counselors, and mental health clinicians; case managers, nutritionists and dieticians; and other support specialists. We service clients of all ages and cultures, and provide services with a sliding fee scale. We do not withhold services to clients with an inability to pay.

HAS is accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF International) and licensed by the Illinois Department of Human Services Division of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse (DASA).  A certified Medicaid provider and a member agency of United Way/Crusade of Mercy, HAS partners with numerous provider networks which include Health Maintenance Organizations, Preferred Provider Organizations, Employee Assistance Programs, and Managed Care Organizations. Our organization, and many individual HAS staff members, have received community service awards and recognitions including those from the National Council on Alcoholism, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the Mayor’s Office of the City of Chicago.
